What the hell is going on? Did we not know that a hurricane was coming? Were we totally unprepared? Why didn't they bus out the poor people? Who's oversight (purposeful?) was it that they were left in the sunken city to die? I wish New Orleans good luck, they're going to need it. Let's hope one of our greatest and most interesting cities is able to recover. Check out this Guardian article about the flood following hurricane Katrina: http://www.guardian.co.uk/katrina/story/0,16441,1560762,00.html
'"It was like a war zone here. There was shooting and looting, and I saw people beating women; it's fucking ugly," said a man with bare, tattooed arms, carrying an empty water canister. He identified himself only as Jason, pointing out he had been in trouble with the law himself. "I'm just trying to get to a bus stop so I can get out of here. Which way are you going?" he wanted to know.'

"Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said that 90 percent of buildings in the worst-hit parts of the state were 'totally just gone'."
this would never happen if New Orleans was made of Rearden Metal.
I wish Ayn Rand would stop commenting.
Praise Jeeeeeeebus On high for wiping that city of its unholy breast baring sin!
Being an objectivist is about as cool as being a mongoloid Ayn. And the looter comment was cool...except that I'm not a looter, I don't live in New Orleans, and I can't carry anything over 5 pounds, so looting isn't really applicable here.
Let me tell you a little about where I stand, you fucking loser objectivist...
I don't really believe in the republican party. And I don't really believe in the democratic party. I just believe in parties.
you know how that makes me feel, steph? Like king of the mongoloids! woooooo durrrrr blaaahhhh pfpfpfpfpfpfptttttt!
I thought that you were a me-ist, Steph.
No. I'm a fuck all of you-ist.
Ok ok, I was just kidding. I love you all. I just had a bad day because I found out that I'M a mongoloid.
On the opening day of school, the young woman who stepped into my shoes as the reading teacher for junior high had taken the time to have the followinng quote hung on a board, each letter individually cut. I knew that my shoes would be more than filled.
"The true measure of a society is how it treats the least of its members.
The disaster in new orleans tests us all; from nation to state, communities down to individuals. Even the attitude we express toward their unfortunate lot is part of that measure.
A piece of Oscar Schindler's story was his willingness to do the little that was in his control in the midst of a holocaust. There is a line from the jewish holy book, the Talmud, that I had on my classroom board for many years. "He who saves one life save the world."
Tired, poor, and huddled masses pretty well describes those americans struggling to keep body and soul together down the river from us.
Now I lay me down to sleep. Clean sheets on a comfortable bed.
