I've always been a big advocate of the whole experience. I loved studying in France and England - the two countries from the Hundred Years' War! They're both great in their own right - France: foreign, more so than England, old, lively, snooty, resentful, beautiful, smart, with a color scheme all it's own. It's a country I wish I could live in forever, even with its ignorance it's one of the most beautiful countries in every way that is. England: understandable, polite, well-tended, drug-addled, gritty brick wonderland. I love it too. I could have stayed forever. The people are nice and funny and comiserate with us lousy Americans.
So why the fuck would you subject someone to something like that? I went over, I loved it, I got a taste of something better that I can never have. I got a dip into cultures that I'll never be able to truly revisit. Why shouldn't I have spent my money on drugs and cars in this stupid country that I'm stuck in. I would rather live in blissful ignorance than pine for what I had. FUCK.
Don't get me wrong, I love Chicago. I LOVE Chicago. I'm enamored with it and I wish it was in Canada. This country is lousy, lazy, consumes insane amounts of everything and I wish I could leave and never look back. That's not exactly true, but I am frustrated. At least that scumfuck Tom DeLay got indicted, in Texas no less. CONVICTIONS FOR THE EVIL.
It is what it is

Good post, will. I had forgotten, but that is one of the bittersweet fruits of travel. Probably life in general.
Reading about France scrolled my mind back to hot summers in her rural rugged southwest corner... supposedly where the heritics hid out during the Inquisition.
Are the words of a brit writer Alfred L. Tennyson 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all' cold comfort ?
Here's a few one minute video clips of my favorite brit these days.

Will,
Brother, can I sympathize. reverse culture shock, or whatever I'd call this contemptuous state, never quite leaves, does it?
Tommy,
You're always a poetic and pun-filled wonder. Bravo.
will when are you starting your club? are you going to make membership cards?
okay, my real motive in asking that was: can I make the membership cards? they'll be nylon wallet-friendly
oh, and I meant to comma after your name and/or capitalize it, since Kit is beginning a new regime as word nazi
THE WORD NAZI DISAPROVETH! And would it be too crass to throw out a 'No Shit' to thumbs up for studying abroad?
Will,
How is it you get more comments than anyone. Do you smell better than the rest of us or is it that you are just so popular that everyone wants to be your friend? By the way are you guys coming camping soon??
Will pays $.50 a post. That's why I'm here. Besides that William, whatever happened to experiences having worth simply because you've experienced them? This is not the ex-patriot we all know and love.
