Wheatpaste

There's an abandoned storefront on Damen and Thomas in Wicker Park that always has the best wheatpaste art on it. I don't know who keeps putting all this great stuff up, but I really dig it. It's put up, then slowly marred by taggers and vandals and the weather until it comes off in strips.

Then an artist comes along and restocks the gallery. Even the decomposition and grafitti is enjoyable, as the art melds and morphs into sort of a ruin of itself.

This little dude kind of looks like Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Notice the gang tags on the skin of this eerie dude.

Public art like this is one of my favorite parts of the neighborhood, when it's done right. Bullshit taggers like 'Preston' and 'Nite Moves' give these guys a bad name. There is artistic merit to printing or drawing out these images, and carefully wheatpasting them when no one is around. Spraying your stupid name just mars the landscape.

This blog is brought to you because I went to work this morning unawares that I'd switched days with someone. I had an early-rising day all to myself, albeit at the high cost of biking to the loop when it was 6 degrees out this morning. I finally got out to take these pictures before this wheatpaste cycle is over.

That's cool you're into this kind of stuff. I forgot there was this notorious place in Chicago where you could climb up a pole and get onto this roof that has another buildings' wall right by it. People do stuff up there all the time. Well I guess there are probably lots of places like those around now...

We were talking about Preston last night and Trevor said that he was going to make a stencil that says 'is a douche bag' and then spray it every where Preston has poorly "tagged".
