Ides of March Rant

I was thinking idly today about the things that I am fascinated and repulsed by simultaneously. The more I thought about it, the more things I could think of that I have this strange ambiguous relationship with. There must be something to this, so without further ado, here is a short-list of things that I love/hate.

Western Avenue – So sad and treeless, full of heartless bike-ignoring motorists going at breakneck speeds. Yet, it is so dingy and raw that you have to kind of admire it. From Roberto Clemente H.S. to the Working Bikes Collective, and the brightly-lit ticky-tacky signs advertising cheap used cars. It’s home to great hot dogs and Mexican food and the starting point of the South Side Irish Parade. Yet it’s so damn ugly.

McDonald’s – I am opposed to it because it’s unhealthy, generally foul tasting, poor quality food. It’s also a political entity supporting evil things from censorship in England (the famous McLibel case) to eliminating potato variety in Idaho and apple variety in Washington by monopolizing these industries, to generally contributing to an unhappy cultural homogeny worldwide. Yet sometimes I just love an Egg McMuffin and hash browns. Curse my weakness!

Cars – They are polluting, bicyclist-killing, laziness-inducing, asshole-creating (road rage) evil machines. I’m getting less ambiguous on this subject. I’ve never owned a car, and don’t intend to anytime in the near future. Yet road trips, and the simple aesthetic of a well-designed automobile both please me. I also like Hot Wheels cars.

My brother Joe - Enough said.

I found an even better western jem than the ones you've listed. Its that ancient Rozol(forgot the actual name) pharmacy on Western and August. They even sell diabetic shoes which I thought must have been a typo until I found the website that showed, "diabetic shoes, footwear for people with diabeties." I may love Western ave even better than LaGrange Ave which you can take from Gurnee(where my family is from) to LaGrange(where my family currently lives, give you Western Springs for all those purists), and finally Champaign where I learned the meaning of life.

the zen philosopher Basho once asked "is it the cars that make the assholes or the assholes that make the cars?"

he also said "a flute with no holes is not a flute. and a donut with no holes is a danish"
